Start with a few moves
Simple moves. A whole new way to hear the music.
GOING OUT SOON?
A comfortable base is a place to start.
You can enjoy a whole track with a small groove. A detail is something to try, and you can let it go whenever you like.
Make a plan for your next night out
Find your space on the floor
Pause at the edge and notice how people are moving. Look for a pocket where you can shift your weight without bumping anyone; the sides or back may offer more room, but every venue is different. Keep exits and walking routes clear.
The rail is the barrier at the front of the stage. It can be crowded and harder to leave, so you do not need to aim for it. When moving through people, go slowly, say “excuse me,” and wait for space. Keep steps and elbows small near others.
You do not need to perform for the room. Bring your attention back to a sound you enjoy or a friend beside you. If the space stops feeling comfortable, take a break or find another spot.
Get back to your base when a move or track changes
Finish the weight transfer you are doing. Bring the free foot comfortably under you, soften your knees, and let your arms relax. Shift right, then left, at a pace you can repeat. Keep that going for a few counts before adding anything.
During a build, keep the same feet and make one arm gesture smaller or larger. If the beat disappears, you can sway gently, stand still, or listen. When the pulse returns, find it again before adding a detail. Fast music can feel comfortable with every-other-beat movement.
Pack for a comfortable night
Bring earplugs and take breaks away from loud speakers. WHO’s safe-listening advice ↗
Wear familiar, comfortable shoes and check how they grip the floor before trying turns. Check your venue’s water and bag policies, locate water and the exits when you arrive, and agree on a meeting point with friends. You can rest whenever you need; there is no requirement to keep up with the room.
